Sound Transit Light Rail Construction Q2-24 Update

The massive Sound Transit light rail project linking various destinations around the Puget Sound, has been years in the making, and continues to open new stops along the existing route. These projects span years of public discourse, analysis, planning and engineering to get off the ground. Here in Washington, environmental impact is always a critical component to any project of this scope, ensuring both natural habitats and existing infrastructure disruptions are kept to a minimum.

The East Link line debuted this last weekend connecting Redmond with Bellevue via light rail. This line is expected to handle about 6,000 riders per day according to Sound Transit. The original plan was supposed to open all the way from Redmond to Seattle, but supports along the I-90 had to be reconstructed due to improper concrete. Initial estimates expected an opening in 2025, but the CEO is pushing back on that date, and likely it’ll be closer to 2026 before riders can access this line. In the Fall of 2024, the highly anticipated Lynwood Line 1 extension from Northgate will open, hopefully alleviating some of the traffic congestion up and down Interstate 5. It adds 8.5 miles and four new stations to the system in Lynwood, Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline.

In the South Sound, I’m most excited to see progress on the light rail extension from Angle Lake to Federal Way. It’s a 7.8 mile project slated to open in 2026. Due to some wetlands challenges through Kent, the project experienced delays, but it’s now more than 80% complete. This line will eventually link Federal Way, to Fife, Tacoma Dome and a final East Tacoma station in 2030, barring any unforeseen additional delays or challenges. This opens up the South Sound to commuters traveling up and down the entire Puget Sound, and even puts SeaTac Airport within a 35 minute ride from Tacoma once completed. With a $2.4B budget, the Sound Transit project will be a game changing development opening areas to employment and residence that were often too difficult to access through traditional means by car.
