Four Interior Design Choices I Avoid as a Seattle-Tacoma Realtor®
Four Interior Design Choices I Avoid as a Seattle-Tacoma Realtor®
Following interior design trends can be tempting, especially when scrolling through visually curated Instagram feeds, flipping through home magazines, or seeing eye-catching decor in showrooms. However, incorporating new trends that catch your eye can lead to a home that feels disconnected from your personality and may lack lasting appeal. Here’s why following interior design trends too closely can be a downside in home design.
1. Trends Can Be Short-Lived
Interior design trends come and go, often as quickly as fashion trends. That beautiful velvet sofa in a daring color might be the star of your living room now, but it could start feeling outdated in just a few years. Trends like mid-century modern furniture or minimalist Scandinavian decor have had longer staying power, but others, such as geometric wallpaper or neon accents, may fade fast. Committing to trends that may lose appeal quickly means you’ll likely find yourself wanting to redecorate sooner, which can be both time-consuming and costly. We saw the color gray rush in like a hurricane into interior design and now it’s quite dated after spending several years at the top of color choices. As a Realtor®. I saw gray floors, gray walls, gray tile and then homeowners would add LED lighting, and suddenly homes felt more antiseptic than ever - lacking personality, charm and warmth.
2. High Costs of Constant Upgrades
Keeping up with trends can get expensive. Many trendy items, such as unique light fixtures, large wall art, or specific cabinetry finishes, are costly investments. When a design trend fades, homeowners may feel pressured to replace or update these elements to keep their home looking current. Rather than splurging on every trend, you can achieve a timeless and cost-effective style by selecting classic, versatile pieces that can easily adapt to small seasonal or aesthetic changes. It is crucial when selecting more permanent items like cabinetry, flooring or tile design, to shy away from trendy choices and find more timeless choices that will stand the test of time.
3. Trend-Focused Designs Lack Personal Touch
While trends are visually appealing, they don’t necessarily reflect your personality, interests, or family needs. Following trends may lead to a home that feels more like a showroom than a personal retreat. A home should be a reflection of its residents, so over-reliance on what’s popular can limit personal expression. Instead, try incorporating timeless elements and adding a few trendy accents that align with your taste. This approach keeps your home feeling both modern and uniquely yours. It also allows space to refresh design every few years by adding or subtracting things that are now more current, without breaking the bank.
4. Incompatibility with Practical Needs
Some trends look fantastic in curated photos but may not align with daily needs or lifestyles. For example, open shelving has been a recent favorite, but it can require more cleaning and organization than traditional cabinets. Similarly, minimalistic decor can lack the warmth or functionality needed in a busy family home. Before committing to a trend, consider your daily routines, storage needs, and comfort to ensure the design will serve you well long-term. Kitchens are featuring more deep drawers and function design, which have much more longevity than curated pot fillers, second sinks and contrasting cabinet colors.
Rather than fully embracing every trend, focus on timeless foundations and add trendy accents sparingly. Incorporate elements that feel like a natural extension of your style, and mix them with pieces that have lasting quality and sentimental value. Doing so creates a space that evolves with you, rather than with the latest design magazine or Pinterest post.
