5 Must-Visit Destinations in Washington State: A Local’s Guide

In my last blog, I covered the incomparable Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park, San Juan Island, Mount Rainier National Park and Snoqualmie Falls. Washington state is bursting with natural beauty, quirky charm, and must-see spots that attract both locals and people looking to relocate to the Puget Sound. Whether you're into hiking, scenic drives, or small-town vibes, there's something here for everyone. Here are five other destinations that perfectly capture what makes Washington so special.

1. Deception Pass – A Natural Wonder with Thrills to Spare

If you haven’t been to Deception Pass, put it on your list. This iconic spot in Washington is a perfect blend of jaw-dropping views, rugged coastlines, and serene forest trails. The Deception Pass Bridge is the highlight, spanning between Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island, with water swirling 180 feet below you.

People come here for the adventure. The park has miles of trails for hiking or exploring, and it’s a favorite spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. At sunset, the bridge practically glows, and the surrounding cliffs and water take on a surreal, almost magical look. Plus, for photographers, it’s a dream—every angle offers something incredible. If you’re here in summer, Deception Pass State Park is a perfect spot to camp and take in the coastal scenery.

2. Leavenworth – A Bavarian Getaway in the PNW

Leavenworth is like stepping into a fairy tale. This charming Bavarian-style village nestled in the Cascade Mountains is full of timber-framed buildings, outdoor cafes, and a calendar packed with seasonal festivals. People flock here year-round, but Leavenworth truly shines during Oktoberfest and the annual Christmas Lighting Festival. You’ll feel like you’ve been transported straight to the Alps, with twinkling lights, snow-capped mountains, and carolers filling the streets.

Beyond the quaint storefronts, there’s also plenty of outdoor activities. In summer, it’s a popular spot for tubing and rafting along the Wenatchee River, and in winter, the skiing and snowboarding at nearby Stevens Pass are some of the best around. Oh, and let’s not forget the wineries! Leavenworth is part of Washington’s wine country, so it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon sampling local wines.

3. Lake Chelan – The Ultimate Summer Destination

Lake Chelan is Washington’s go-to summer spot. The lake itself stretches for over 50 miles, making it one of the largest in the state. People come here for the clear blue water, the sandy beaches, and the endless options for water sports. Boating, jet skiing, paddleboarding—if it can float, you’ll find it on Lake Chelan.

Beyond the lake, the town of Chelan is full of laid-back vibes, charming shops, and lots of wineries. In fact, Lake Chelan is quickly becoming one of Washington’s best wine destinations. Many wineries have tasting rooms with views of the lake, so you can sip on a glass of local Riesling or Syrah while soaking in the scenery. And for the adventure seekers, nearby hiking trails provide some fantastic viewpoints over the lake.

4. Whidbey Island – Small-Town Charm with a Touch of History

Just a short drive and ferry ride from Seattle, Whidbey Island feels like a world away from the city. This island has it all—scenic beaches, art galleries, boutique shops, and enough small-town charm to keep you coming back. Langley, the island’s main town, is full of quirky art galleries and cafes. You can also find great whale-watching spots along the island’s coast.

Another must-see spot on Whidbey Island is Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. It’s one of the best places for a scenic walk or hike, and the views are incredible—golden fields, rolling bluffs, and the Puget Sound stretching out before you. With campgrounds, trails, and historic sites, Whidbey Island is perfect for a weekend getaway. And don’t miss the mussels at Coupeville, another charming town on the island known for its fresh seafood!

5. Columbia River Gorge – A Hiker’s Paradise

The Columbia River Gorge is an awe-inspiring natural wonder. With towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and some of the best hikes in the Pacific Northwest, this place is a true outdoor paradise. Stretching along the Washington-Oregon border, the gorge is home to over 90 waterfalls, including the famous Multnomah Falls just across the river in Oregon. But Washington has its own gems, like Beacon Rock, a challenging but rewarding climb with stunning views over the river.

For road-trippers, the scenic drive along Highway 14 is worth the trip alone, with countless viewpoints and picnic spots along the way. Wind and kite surfers also flock here to take advantage of the gorge’s unique wind conditions, making it a top destination for extreme sports lovers.

Whether you’re a lifelong Washingtonian or a relocating to Washington, these spots showcase some of the best of what our beautiful state has to offer. Each destination has its own character, from the sheer beauty of Deception Pass to the laid-back vibe of Whidbey Island. So grab a camera, pack your snacks, and start exploring these gems of the Pacific Northwest!
