What's the Weather Really Like in the Puget Sound? A Seasonal Breakdown for Potential Homebuyers

If you're considering a move to the Puget Sound region, chances are you’ve heard about the rain. But what’s the truth behind the reputation? Is it constantly wet and gray—or is there more to the story? As a long-time real estate broker who calls this area home, I can tell you: the weather here is part of what makes the Pacific Northwest so special. Here's what you can really expect across the four seasons—and how it varies between Seattle, Tacoma, and the Kitsap Peninsula.

Spring (March to May): A Fresh Start

Spring in the Puget Sound is a season of renewal. You'll notice longer days, blooming cherry blossoms, and vibrant greenery everywhere. While March and early April still carry some drizzle, May typically sees a dramatic shift toward clearer skies. Seattle may see slightly more cloud cover compared to Tacoma or Bremerton, but the difference is subtle.

Temperatures hover in the 50s and low 60s, making it perfect for hiking, biking, or taking a ferry to Bainbridge Island. Expect some light rain, but not the downpours people often assume. In fact, much of our "rain" is mist or drizzle—easy to live with and often brief.

Summer (June to August): The Crown Jewel

Ask any local: summer is when the Puget Sound shines brightest. From late June through August, the region enjoys dry, sunny days, comfortable temperatures in the 70s, and long daylight hours—often past 9 p.m.

Tacoma tends to be slightly warmer and sunnier than Seattle, thanks to its position south of the Puget Sound. Kitsap County, with its abundance of coastal towns, offers a refreshing maritime breeze that keeps things cool and pleasant. Rainfall during these months is minimal, and the skies are often a deep, clear blue.

Summer is the best time to explore the outdoors—think paddleboarding on Lake Union, hiking Mt. Rainier, or wine tasting on the Bainbridge Island Wine Trail. It’s also a competitive time in the housing market, as many buyers and sellers time their moves to coincide with the school calendar and fair weather.

Fall (September to November): Crisp and Colorful

Fall in the Puget Sound brings a chill in the air and a vibrant burst of color. The maple trees around Tacoma and the parks of Seattle turn brilliant shades of red and orange. September often feels like an extension of summer, especially in the South Sound.

By mid-October, the rain begins to return, and temperatures dip into the 50s. But unlike other parts of the country, fall here is generally milder. Kitsap experiences more frequent morning fog due to its proximity to water, but this often burns off by midday.

This is an excellent time to buy real estate—competition slows a bit, and the natural beauty of the season can make neighborhoods feel even more charming.

Winter (December to February): Mild and Moody

Winter in the Puget Sound is often misunderstood. Yes, it’s gray. Yes, it rains. But no, it’s not unbearable. Temperatures rarely fall below freezing, and snow is infrequent—especially in Seattle and Tacoma. When snow does arrive, it usually melts within a day or two.

What you'll mostly get are overcast skies, light rain, and moody, cozy vibes perfect for coffee shops, bookstores, and local art galleries. Kitsap may see a bit more snow and chill due to its elevation changes and rural pockets, but it’s nothing like the harsh winters of the Midwest or East Coast.

And here's the surprising part: cities like New York, Boston, and even Miami receive more annual rainfall than Seattle—ours just comes in smaller, more frequent doses.

So, What’s the Verdict?

If you can handle a few gray days and appreciate a temperate climate with distinct, beautiful seasons, the Puget Sound region offers an incredibly livable environment. Each city has its own microclimate—Tacoma’s sunnier stretches, Seattle’s urban coziness, Kitsap’s coastal mist—and together, they offer a variety of living experiences suited to every lifestyle.
