Why Living in Tacoma, Washington is Becoming More Attractive
Affectionately known as Grit City and Originally The City of Destiny, Tacoma, Washington offers an interesting blend of modern conveniences while still keeping much of its historical charm. The cultural energy, access to incredible nature and waterways, scenic beauty, and easy access to the mountains and ocean give Tacoma a wonderful personality. And if you’re looking to relocate, Tacoma is far and away less expensive than Seattle, and only 40 minutes South.
Culture and Arts
Though not specifically a cultural hub of the Northwest, the heart of Tacoma’s downtown Museum District bursts with world-class attractions—including the Museum of Glass (with the iconic Chihuly Bridge of Glass), Tacoma Art Museum (home to the premier collection of Northwest and Chihuly glass artworks), and the Washington State History Museum. Tacoma Arts Month and monthly public art initiatives keep creativity alive city‑wide.
Tacoma has an incredible number of arts organizations from painting, to pottery, glass art and more. For artists, Tacoma is a wonderful place to call home.
Nature and Beauty
Tacoma abuts the Puget Sound on the north and east, and Commencement Bay is an incredible attraction for boaters, fishermen, and those looking for activity on the waterfront. Hotels like Silver Cloud, and restaurants like Woven are newer additions to the Commencement Bay waterfront that keep locals and visitors coming back again and again. Though Washingtonians are always outside, the Summertime is especially active along the waterfront with joggers, dog walkers and people taking in the incredible views of Vashon Island and Brown’s Point.
Affordability and Value
With Median home prices coming in at just over $500,000 in 2025, Tacoma offers a much better value for homeowners looking to make a home in the Pacific Northwest when compared to Seattle. With just over 250,000 people, Tacoma feels like a good sized city, but still captures that small-town feel in areas like the Proctor District, Old Town and the Stadium District. Though not immune to the price increases of dining and entertainment, Tacoma still offers a value over other nearby larger cities.
Community and Demographics
Young professionals, families, and retirees are drawn to Tacoma’s inclusive vibe and welcoming neighborhoods. Many relocate to be near family or friends while still gaining privacy and affordability in a separate, connected city. Tacoma is incredibly diverse and welcomes people from all over the world. A thriving Asian community and Ukranian community are incredibly important to Tacoma’s rich history.
Transit
Tacoma’s public transportation includes Pierce Transit buses, Sounder commuter rail, Link light rail, and local ferries, making movement across the city—and to Seattle—convenient without over-reliance on driving. Interstate 5 is generally always busy and Tacoma sits between Olympia and Seattle with a close proximity to Joint Base Lewis McChord. Drive time to Seattle-Tacoma airport is generally about 30 minutes.
Climate and Outdoors
Despite the Pacific Northwest rainy reputation, Tacoma gets about 39 inches of rain per year, less than Houston and New York City, though overcast days to persist from October through May. The Summertime in Tacoma is one of the most incredible times to be here. It is generally dry with most days barely reaching 80º. Most people in our region do not travel during Summer since it’s just too incredible outside to leave.
Totalling this all up: Tacoma offers compelling value—spectacular scenery, a thriving cultural scene, a strong sense of community, and the hallmarks of urban life at a more manageable scale and cost. Whether you’re a creative professional, family unit, retiree, or outdoor enthusiast, Tacoma stands out with an inviting mix of grit, growth, and genuine charm.
